Comparing Natural Lighting and Studio Lighting in Photography (Which is Better?)

In photography I’ve always found there to be two types of photographers. There are those who swear by natural light photography, and those who swear by studio light photography with less middle ground. Everyone has his or her own opinion on this highly controversial subject, being extremely loyal to their side.

I myself still just being introduced into the world of photography don’t exactly have the strongest opinion on the subject. I mean of course I like studio photography for the ability to control every aspect of the lighting, but I also find studio photography to be less exciting sometimes.

I find myself drawn to natural light photography more than studio photography because the backgrounds add an element that is fun to work with and being in a natural environment is just more fun for shooting all together. I also enjoy the element of unpredictability that is part of shooting in a natural environment. I love dealing with obstacles and working eith what is available.

This ties into the fact that I don’t what to have to plan out each and every aspect of each shot. I like to let my visions find themselves to an extent, which keeps things fresh and exciting for me. Although I realize studio photography has its place, and can be very creative. The enjoyment for me is greater when managing multiple environmental factors and visual elements. There is always a time when a studio lighting setup would be more appropriate than a natural light setting such as a business headshot, or a fine art image where complete control is more desirable.

Through my research and limited experience so far I have found that to be a successful photographer that does not specialize in a specific genre or idea that you are well off learning both techniques and using them to your advantage.

Art in itself is subjective, what one person finds incredible and breathtaking, another person could despise, so I cannot say whether or not natural light is better or not, because my opinion in itself is subjective, as art is.

It all just boils down to personal preference, and its as simple as that. So arguing about which lighting technique is better or bashing one another for your style just go shoot your passion.
